Dr Noah KerandiThe Department of Geology and Meteorology is one of the departments established in the School of Water Resources Science and Technology, South Eastern Kenya University(SEKU). The department was established to focus on teaching, research and capacity development in Aquatic Sciences. Vision To be a department of excellence in high quality Limnology and Marine Sciences training, research, outreach, technological development and consultancy for the advancement of human well-being. Mission To provide an academically motivating environment that enhances training of highly qualified personnel for aquatic ecosystems conservation and management through provision of quality education, research, extension and consultancy services Objectives of the Department To train personnel in aquatic ecology by offering educational programmes in applied Limnology and Marine Sciences at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. To offer extension services and increase awareness on aquatic ecosystems conservation and management issues among professionals, government officials, local communities, institutions and other key stakeholders. To provide a forum for effective collaboration between the public and private sectors and other interested parties for conservation and management of aquatic ecosystems. To offer consultancy services in the conservation and management of aquatic ecosystems. To conduct research and generate publications in limnology and marine sciences in order to disseminate information and innovative technologies for sustainable aquatic resources conservation and management. BSc. in Integrated Coastal Zone Management BSc. in Aquatic Ecotoxicology MSc. in Aquatic Resources Management MSc. in Ecotourism and Coastal Policy The Department is also in the process of developing several short courses in Aquatic Ecosystems’ Conservation and Management. These courses include ; Integrated River Basin Management, Integrated Lake Basin Management, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Ecotourism, Mariculture,Wetland Management and Restoration etc. COMMUNITY SERVICE AND OUTREACH Tailor-made short courses targeting specific groups are offered by the department. The short courses are aimed at addressing specific community needs thus, an important contribution by the department to the community. These short courses include but not limited to: Integrated River Basin Management, Integrated Lake Basin Management, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Ecotourism, Mariculture, Wetland Management and Restoration etc CAREER PROSPECTS The department graduates are strategically placed to play a leading role in the management and conservation of aquatic ecosystems. Potential employers of the graduates include: Government Agencies (e.g.. KWS, KEMFRI, NEMA, Fisheries, MENR. etc). Water and Sewerage Companies. UNEP, UNICEF, Private firms NGO’s The graduates can also venture into self employment as well as consultancy work. CURRENT RESEARCH The research interests of the Department of Applied Limnology and Marine Sciences include Water Quality, Aquatic Ecosystems Management and Conservation, Wetland Management, Conservation and Restoration, Fish and Fisheries Biology and Aquaculture. Currently the department is involved in: Development of Fish ponds in conjunction with the Department of Fisheries Management and Aquaculture Technology within the university under the Kenya Government Economic stimulus Programme (ESP) Assessment of the Benthic Fauna and Fisheries Biodiversity of Mida creek mangrove ecosystem.
